A/C Condenser
The outdoor component of your air conditioning system that releases heat from inside your home.
Acre
A land measurement equal to 43,560 square feet.
Aggregate
Sand, gravel, or crushed stone mixed with cement and water to create concrete.
Air Space
The gap between framing and exterior materials that allows for insulation and moisture control.
Alcove
A recessed area within a room, often near a window or entryway.
Anchor Bolt
Heavy-duty bolts that secure the home’s framing to the foundation.
Attic
The space beneath the roof used for ventilation, insulation, and sometimes storage.
Backing
Support lumber placed between wall studs to reinforce drywall or allow for secure mounting of fixtures.
Balusters and Banister
Balusters are the vertical posts on a staircase. The banister is the handrail they support.
Board Foot
A lumber measurement equal to one foot by one foot by one inch thick.
Cathedral Ceiling
A high, sloped ceiling that creates an open and spacious feel.
Caulking
Sealant used to close gaps around windows, doors, and trim to prevent air and moisture leaks.
Dimension Lumber
Standard framing lumber such as 2x4s and 2x6s.
Doorjamb
The frame that surrounds and supports a door.
Easement
A legal right allowing utilities or others limited access to a portion of your property.
Eaves
The part of the roof that extends beyond exterior walls to direct rainwater away.
Elevation (Façade)
The exterior design and architectural style of the front of the home.
Flashing
Metal material installed at roof and wall joints to prevent water intrusion.
GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)
Safety outlets designed to shut off power in the event of an electrical surge, commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms.
Hose Bib
An exterior water faucet used for irrigation or outdoor hoses.
Infiltration
Uncontrolled air entering the home through cracks or openings.
Irrigation
A sprinkler system designed to water landscaping.
Joist
Horizontal structural supports used in floors and ceilings.
Lot Line
The legal boundary of your property.
Masonry
Construction using brick, stone, or concrete block.
Moisture Barrier
Material installed to prevent water penetration in foundations or walls.
Nonbearing Wall
A wall that divides space but does not support structural weight.
Plat Map
A detailed map showing lot lines, easements, streets, and community layout within a subdivision.
Plumbing Rough-In
The phase of construction when plumbing lines are installed but fixtures are not yet connected.
R-Value
A measurement of insulation performance. Higher R-values indicate greater resistance to heat transfer.
Slab Foundation
A concrete foundation poured directly on the ground, common in Florida due to soil and water conditions.
Transom Window
A window placed above a door or larger window to allow additional natural light.
